Meet Dr. Januario Ernesto
Who You Are
My name is Januário Tomás Ernesto, and I am from Mozambique. I hold a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences, an MSc in the Chemistry of Natural Products, and a BSc in Biology. My academic work focuses on medicinal chemistry and ethnopharmacology, particularly the design, synthesis, and biological evaluation of potential drug candidates, as well as the study of bioactive natural products.
What Brought You to Villa
I arrived at Villa International in January 2026, as a Fulbright Scholar conducting research at Emory University’s Department of Pharmacology and Chemical Biology. My current work focuses on developing new drug candidates for Alzheimer’s disease. This fellowship is an important opportunity to strengthen scientific exchange and long-term collaboration between Mozambique and the United States.
I first heard about Villa through the Fulbright program and colleagues who spoke highly of its welcoming environment. I chose Villa because it offers more than a place to stay—it provides a multicultural, supportive community that understands the needs of international scholars. Its proximity to Emory and its reputation as a “home away from home” made it the perfect choice.
Tell Us About Your Work
I am passionate about academic internationalization—building scientific connections across cultures. A memorable part of my journey has been my experience as a Fulbright Scholar in the United States, where I have collaborated with leading researchers in Pharmacology and Chemical Biology at Emory University.
Villa is a bridge between cultures, making the experience of being an international researcher both enriching and less isolating.
Future Plans
Professionally, I plan to return to Mozambique and apply the advanced pharmacology and chemical biology techniques I’ve developed at Emory. I will continue leading research at Rovuma University, focusing on creating new medicines derived from Mozambique’s rich biodiversity.
I am also committed to launching PharmaShare MZ, a startup dedicated to pharmaceutical innovation. My goal is to help transform the scientific landscape in Mozambique by building sustainable connections between academia and industry.
My time in Atlanta has been transformative. It has given me the technical expertise and international network needed to elevate my research to a global level. Villa International has played a crucial role by providing the supportive environment necessary to pursue these ambitions. The intercultural conversations I’ve had here have broadened my perspective on global health challenges and strengthened my commitment to connecting Mozambican traditional knowledge with modern pharmaceutical science.
I will leave Atlanta not only with research results, but with a global vision for the future of medicine in Africa.
Villa Experience
Villa has been an essential support system during my transition to life in the United States. It offers a peaceful environment where I can focus on my research while connecting with people from many different countries and disciplines. For me, Villa is a bridge between cultures, making the experience of being an international researcher both enriching and less isolating.
What stands out most is the sense of global connection. Sharing breakfast with a scientist from Japan and dinner with a scholar from Brazil creates a unique intellectual and cultural energy. The staff’s dedication to making every resident feel welcomed and supported truly sets Villa apart.
The community events—especially the shared dinners—have been incredibly meaningful. These gatherings break the routine of laboratory work and create space for genuine friendships. We share our cultures, our challenges, and our successes. Having a community that celebrates your milestones makes being far from home much easier.
Villa has shaped my time in Atlanta in profound ways. Instead of feeling like a visitor in a large city, I found a sense of belonging from the very beginning. Villa has turned my research stay into a holistic life experience, and my memories of Atlanta will always be tied to the kindness and diversity I found here.
